Japanese airport to take budget passengers
    Phoenix Herald
    Monday 15th March, 2010

Japan is trying to increase its budget travel reach with the opening of a new airport at Ibaraki.

Ibaraki, which is Japan's 98th airport, is located about 80 kilometres from Tokyo.

It was built with the idea of making it a secondary airport to Narita International and Haneda Airport, the capital's two main transport hubs.

Low-budget carriers will fly from the airport, starting with only two flights per day.

One flight, which is conducted by South Korean carrier Asiana Airlines, goes to Seoul.

The other flight, by Japan's SkyMark Airlines, flies internally to Kobe.

Airport authorities are currently in touch with other low-cost carriers from China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Macau to establish additional schedules.
